Ultrasound is a test that uses sound waves to make a picture of the organs and structures of the body. Muleshoe Radiology Department provides ultrasound exams of the gallbladder, pelvis, transvaginal pelvic, liver, spleen, thyroid, OBGYN, scrotum, pancreas, retroperitoneal, and kidneys.
Organs and structures that are solid and uniform, or are fluid-filled, show up clearly. Bones and air-filled organs do not show up well and may prevent other organs from being visualized. For this reason, you may be required to be without food or drink for 8 hours prior to the exam. For other exams where the fluid helps the technician to see organs better, you may be required to drink water before coming for the exam. It is very important that you follow the instructions that you are given to you in the radiology department or the physician’s office.
You may or may not have to remove clothing, depending on the type of ultrasound you are having done. You will be asked to lay down on your back on a padded examination table. A gel will be placed on the area that will be examined. A transducer will be pressed against your skin and moved across your body at various angles several times. You may be asked to roll to one side or sit up during the examination.
