COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT, CT SCANS, CAT SCAN)

A CAT scan uses three dimensional x-ray to make detailed images of the inside of the body. There may be some preparation required, depending on the type of exam that is ordered. It is very important to follow these instructions for a complete diagnostic exam. Many times you may be asked to have nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to the exam. These instructions wil be given to you before your exam in it is required for you to be fasting.

If the doctor orders contrast in media, lab work will be required before we administer the contrast. You may need to drink barium before your exam in addition to the IV contrast. The contrast or iodine will be given with a needle or IV. Before the iodine contrast can be administered, the technician will ask several questinos and you will be required to sign consent for the injection. The contrast is used to look for tumors, and to check blood flow, or any other problems the doctor may be concerned about. The CT scan may be done before and after injection of the contrast.

Once you are ready for the exam, you will be asked to lay on a table that will guide you into the round opening of the scanner. X-ray pulses will be sent through the area of the body being studied. The images will be saved on a computer. The “Gantry” part of the scanner can be tilted to take pictures at different angles.
